In this picture you can see that
the view of the kerb is in line with the edge of the windscreen
wiper. This point becomes your reference point. At this moment the
car is at the starting point. We are about 3 to4 car lengths from
the corner and about 30cms from the kerb.
The
actual reference will point will need to be found to suit each
driver, as this will vary. Park your car around 30cms from the kerb.
ensure that you are parallel and then look to see where the kerb
goes out of view. This point becomes your reference point.

 |
Initially I am following the
line of the kerb to ensure I stay a uniform distance from the kerb.
|
 |
At this point the view of the
kerb has dropped below my ref point. You can see the view of the
kerb moving to the right in the rear wind screen. You must be
careful not to follow the kerb at this point.
As you can see I am following
the white line as it crosses the road. If you follow the kerb at
this point you will get too close to the kerb before you are ready
to start your turn. |
 |
 |
|
I
am now at my point of turn. Through trial and error I have decided that this
is the point at which I will begin to turn left. Notice that my reference
point is now on the kerb the other side of the junction. The point at
which the kerb is going out of sight in the side window is now used as a
second reference point. This tells me I am at my point of turn.
Use this moment! You
have to pause a moment to look around so think to yourself “I now need to start turning
the wheel as I begin to move again”. Do not rush!
|
 |
I’m now looking into the new
road and the view of the kerb is travelling from the right towards
the centre of my window. My reference point is now pointing about 2
metres into the road. I’ve not finished steering back to straight
ahead yet. By the time my wheels are pointing ahead I want my
reference point to be pointing at the kerb.
|
 |
You
can now see that my reference point is now almost on the kerb. Any
steering done at this point should be done in small amounts. A
quarter of a turn, then straighten again. If you turn and hold
until you see the effect, you will over steer. |

|
At this point I have
completed the manoeuvre. My reference point is on the kerb and in the
mirror; you can see how far I am from the kerb.
