Taking your Theory Test....

Part 1 - THEORY TEST

The Theory test was effective from 1stJanuary 2000, and is required to be passed before booking your practical test.  It is a Touch-Screen based test and consists of 35 multiple choice questions.  You will have 40 minutes to complete the test, and must get at least 30 questions correct out of 35 in order to pass this element.

  • There is a break of up to 3 minutes between Part 1 and Part 2

Part 2 - HAZARD PERCEPTION

This extra test was introduced as part of the Theory test in November 2002, and consists 14 video clips featuring real road scenes and developing hazards. Each test has at least 1 scorable hazard, with a total of 15 scorable hazards spread over the 14 clips.  You are assessed on how soon you spot the hazards, and must score 44 out of 75 in order to pass this element.

  • You must pass both elements to pass your Theory Test
  • You cannot re-sit one element, both must be passed at the same time.
  • The Theory Test Pass certificate is valid for 2 years.  You must take your practical test within this time, or you will have to re-take your theory test.
  • You receive your test results, and feedback information, within 30 minutes of finishing the test.
  • Things to remember when taking your
    "Hazard Perception test":-

  • When you click for a hazard remember, "you don't score until you take your finger off the mouse button". The score is for a click not a down press. If you hold the button down even for a second you will be losing marks.  Don't be afraid of clicking too often, as long as you can see a developing hazard it is ok to click.  Every time you see a hazard develop, click again.  However, don't click continuously from start to finish otherwise you will be penalised for that clip.

  • When you click, you only have to click the button. Don't try to get your cursor on the hazard. It may seem obvious, but this mistake has been made.

The DSA's own DVD Road sense DVD is excellent for showing what is involved in this test.  It shows each clip and gives you a chance to score.

It then gives you the result of your score and replays each clip and explains what they were looking for and when was the best chance of scoring.  They also point out some hazards which you may have clicked on but which were not the ones which carry the score.
